Originally named after Kaibao Buddhist Monastery to which it belonged, the Iron Pagoda, built in 1049, is a national cultural relic enlisted for protection by the State Council in 1961. “Iron Pagoda” is actually a nickname as many people confused the glazed bricks covering its body with iron, both in deep brown colour. It enjoys high reputation mainly because of its super excellent architectural art and its grand yet elegant figure.
